Islands are special. They require an extra intention to reach them. To reach Ocracoke that intention involves a ferry, a boat, or an airplane. There are no bridges to Ocracoke. Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, is a barrier island, the southern most in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Of it's 16 mile length, only the 900 acres of village around Silver Lake are developed. The rest of the island is national park without permanent structures. It is home to the oldest lighthouse on the Outer Banks. The former hideout of Blackbeard the Pirate, the village of Ocracoke nestles on the soundside. Pamlico Sound stretches 23 miles to the west before the North Carolina mainland coast. There are no roller coasters, golf courses, or go cart tracks here. There are 16 miles of open ocean beach, excellent restaurants, nice shops, dolphins in the surf, and birds the in marshes. Bicycles and walking are the best way to tour the historic sights of the village. Kayaks are available to take you into the backwaters. Come watch the sun rise from the ocean and set in the sound. Come and share in an Island Path workshop on our special island. |
